The Max-Born-Institute invites applications for a PhD position (m/f/d) - Sub-cycle nanoplasma dynamics and nanoprocessing in solid dielectrics

Job profile:

The goal of the research project is to study and control the sub-cycle dynamics and the sub-wavelength confinement of plasma formation in solid dielectrics irradiated with ultrashort pulses. The candidate will investigate the fundamentals of strong field ionization in transparent materials with the help of an original all-optical method based on low-order optical wave mixing. The main application pursued by this research is the direct laser fabrication of controlled sub-surface nanostructures and their practical use in integrated optics.

The PhD position will be supported in the frame of a „Collaborative Research Centre“ program designed to favor and intensify multidisciplinary research. The researcher will thus be a part of a larger structure involving the University of Rostock.

Requirements:

We are looking for a PhD student (m/f/d) holding a Master Degree in physics or equivalent. The research program is at the frontier between many fields including nonlinear optics, femtosecond lasers, material science and/or solid state physics requiring a highly motivated candidate with a solid background in one or more of these areas. The applicant (m/f/d) is expected to work in close collaboration with the group of Prof. Fennel (University of Rostock) who will provide the theoretical support. This PhD position strongly focuses on the experimental aspects of laser-matter interaction. Therefore, a propensity for hands-on work in a scientific laboratory is expected, including the ability to set up complicated optical arrangements and to develop software infrastructure for data acquisition and processing. Knowledge of the English language is essential. In conjunction to the application the candidate must be accepted by the doctoral school of the Freie Universität Berlin.

Offer:
