MBI invites applications for 1 PhD student (m/f/d) for the investigation of entanglement and decoherence in small molecules upon photoionization using isolated attosecond pulses. The doctoral candidate will be a member of the European QU-ATTO network. QU-ATTO is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Training Network that unites 14 academic institutions, three large-scale facilities, four industrial companies, and two outreach partners across 10 European countries.

Job profile:

A central goal of the QU-ATTO network is to advance the integration of quantum optics and quantum information science with attosecond physics. The doctoral candidate will study how the degree of entanglement between nitrogen ions produced by attosecond photoionization and the photoelectrons produced in this ionization process depends on the laboratory frame orientation, and how the degree of entanglement impacts on the observable degree of electronic coherence. The work builds on previous research investigating the role of entanglement in experiments addressing vibrational and electronic coherence in hydrogen molecules (see Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 113203 (2021) and Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 043201 (2022)). The project will be carried out in close collaboration with theoreticians from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, and will make use of a unique setup enabling attosecond-pump attosecond-probe spectroscopy with unprecedented stability.

Requirements:

We are looking for highly motivated and talented applicants. Master or diploma degree in physics, good knowledge in ultrafast laser physics, experience in attosecond physics and / or vacuum technology is beneficial. To be eligible for this PhD position the applicant should fulfil the trans-national mobility criterion, i.e. not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the recruitment date — unless as part of a compulsory national service or a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention.

In addition, the applicant has to be — at the date of recruitment — a doctoral candidate (i.e. not already in possession of a doctoral degree). Researchers who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree will not be considered eligible.

Offer:

This is a full-time position with 3 years duration. For the salary of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie PhDs in Germany the European Commission provides a monthly Living Allowance of 3,342.20 € plus a monthly Mobility Allowance of 600 €. Researchers who have or acquire family obligations during their employment are also awarded a monthly Family Allowance of 660 €. Please note that the combined amounts form the monthly gross employer salary, which is subject to deductions and taxes as per national law. The monthly gross salary varies, depending on the personal circumstances, and amounts to approximately 3,250 €/3,800 € (without family allowance/with family allowance). Family is defined as persons linked to the researcher by (i) marriage, or (ii) a relationship with equivalent status to a marriage recognised by the legislation of the country or region where this relationship was formalised, or (iii) dependent children who are actually being maintained by the researcher. A Special Needs Allowance might be awarded to recruited researchers with disabilities whose long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments are certified by a competent national authority and of such nature that their participation in the action would not be possible without the special needs items or services.

MBI is an equal-opportunity employer and places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for women. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply.

If equally qualified, severely handicapped persons are given preference.

MBI supports the reconcilability of family and working life and is certified by the audit workandfamily (audit berufundfamilie) as a family-friendly employer. Please upload your application, including cover letter, curriculum vitae, certificates and description of previous professional activities electronically via the MBI online recruiting platform at https://mbi-berlin.de/career. Review of applications will begin in January 2025 and continue until the position is filled.
